12 Blocks for Christmas – ‘Stars are Dancing’

Members saw some already completed blocks, so we are on the way to having our first set of Christmas Blocks to give away at our Christmas breakups. This block – Friends in the Evening - is machined pieced by Denise Shearer. She says:

‘Some of my favourite Christmas carols include references to the stars. Be it ‘O Star of wonder, star of night, Star of royal beauty bright’ or ‘They looked up and saw a star, Shining in the east, beyond them far, And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night’. So for this friendship activity it just had to include a Star, and this block incorporates two traditional blocks.

The Evening Star Block typically has a centre square that is part of the background fabric. I got the idea of inserting another star in the centre square as according to Maggie Malone who authored 1,001 Patchwork Designs a variation of this block called Stars and Squares has the same arrangement of pieces in the centre square. I chose to insert a Friendship Star instead. I hope that you are inspired to get stitching!’

Denise is prepared to lend her book to other EQI members if you are interested, or you may be interested in borrowing another of Maggie’s books – 5500 Full-Size Patchwork Patterns* – from the Library.
