National Jelly Roll Day…

by EQI Member: Robyn R.

So it was the third Saturday in September - an annual day designated by Moda Fabrics & the quilting industry as ‘National Jelly Roll Day’ in the USA - and our local patchwork shops picked it up and promoted the event with specials and patterns.

Amongst the many YouTube quilters, Tiny Orchard Quilts designed a free pattern - quick, easy and why not give it a go? After all, there are a few rolls in the stash just hanging around waiting to be used.

Had fun (went bonkers?), trying layouts where the blocks with the same fabrics are not next to each other. Taking a black and white photo on the phone helped with distributing by value, but swapping one block lead to whiling away an hour or two playing ‘swapsies’ with a bunch of blocks!

Finally got to sewing up blocks and rows, and the best bit is that there are no seams needing to be matched from block to block in a row. That’s what makes it quick and easy!

Did you work on a jelly roll quilt on National Jelly Roll Day? Have you made a jelly roll quilt? What do you think about making a jelly roll quilt for September 2022? We have books in our library to tempt you with patterns. Have a look here.

What to do with the leftover patches from the ends of the jellyroll strips - make another quilt of course! Just enough, along with a fat quarter for sashing, to make a small baby sized Chinese coin pattern.
